St Helier

History
The administrative and cultural center of Jersey, St. Helier is also a residential town, resort, and point of export for local produce. Royal Square was the scene of a battle (1781), when the French unsuccessfully attempted to regain Jersey. St Helier. The parish church dates partly from the 14th cent. A museum, art gallery, zoo, and an observatory are in the town. On an adjacent island, protecting the harbor and connected with the mainland at low tide, is Elizabeth Castle, built in the late 16th cent. Near the castle is a rock that was supposedly the hermitage of St Helier or St. Helerius, the early missionary for whom the town was named. On the rock are the ruins of a 12th-century chapel. Victoria College, dating from 1852, is there.

Information
As harbour construction moved development seaward, a growth in population meant that marshland and pasture north of the ribbon of urban activity was built on speculatively. St Helier. Settlement by English immigrants added quarters of colonial-style town houses to the traditional building stock. Continuing military threats from France spurred the construction of a citadel fortress, Fort Regent, on the Mont de la Ville, the crag dominating the shallow basin of St. Helier. Military roads linking coastal defences around the island with St Helier harbour had the effect of enabling farmers to exploits Jersey's temperate micro-climate and get their crops onto new fast sailing ships and then steamships to get their produce into the markets of London and Paris before the competition. This was the start of Jersey's agricultural prosperity in the 19th century. St Helier. From the 1820s, peace with France and better communications enabled by steamships and railways to coastal ports encouraged an influx of English-speaking residents. St Helier. Speculative development covered the marshy basin north of the central coastal strip as far as the hills within a period of about 40 years, providing the town with terraces of elegant town houses.

Liberation Square
The walk starts in Liberation Square, outside the Jersey Tourism office. This 1901 building was the railway terminus for the line to St Aubin, which operated from 1870 to 1936. Liberation Square was opened by Prince Charles on the 9th May 1995 to mark the 50th Anniversary of the end of the Occupation. St Helier. The design of the square signifies freedom, with a sculpture by Philip Jackson as the centrepiece. Above looms Mont de la Ville and Fort Regent, built 1804-1814, now a leisure centre. You can see the signal-mast, which is hand operated and still used for warnings of storms, gales and high tides.

Royal Square
Cross over into Royal Square. St Helier. This was the market place (Le Vieux Marchi) until 1802. Look for the name of the Red Cross ship 'VEGA:, spelt out in granite by Le Guyader in December 1944, while making repairs to the square. The building nearest this point, with the wide balcony, is the 17th century Corn Exchange, now the Registry Office where visitors and locals alike can get married. St Helier. On the roof above, a sculpture of standards, cannon, and drum, marks the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Jersey, 6th January 1781.
